Ft. Brown soldiers drinking
We've seen a lot of photos from the Robert Runyon Collection of soldiers doing drills on parade grounds and playing polo and playing baseball like it was a huge resort at the Fort but this photo shows another activity soldiers partook in. Most offenses that landed soldiers in the stockade (Army jail) stemmed from insubordinate behavior while under the influence of alcohol. If they were transferred to the Army Hospital it was because they experienced "delirium tremens" which is the severe withdrawal of alcohol resulting in tremors, hallucinations, anxiety and other symptoms. There were jail cells for imprisoned patients on the second floor of the hospital.
