Exploring Theaters & Drive-ins of Brownsville, Texas

Thanks to all who read article on the Queen Theater.  We'll take a look at another one of Brownsville's earliest theaters in a future post.  We don't have a full history of each theater but we've come a long way since 2005 this was created in an early version of CorelDraw.

1949 Romulo Cuellar - Brownsville's Charro with his horse Valiente!

1950 0212 Brownsville Herald clip -- Romulo Cuellar is no longer a name we hear when Charro Days arrives each year but he was once the iconic symbol which epitomized the Charro and his horse (whose name was Valiente!).
(thanks to Marty Brophy for reminding us).

Romulo Cuellar was a well known horseman since Charro Days began in 1938. His horse would dance and rear up in the air as seen in this photo. When the Charro Drive In was built (1949) his likeness was used to paint the mural.

1952 - Easter Sunday at Charro DI

As manager of the Charro Drive-In part of Marshall Nichols' job was to attract people to the DI to watch movies but on Sundays the DI was used for Sunday church services where people could sit in their cars and listen to a preacher DI movie speaker that attached to door/window of car.  Here is something fun he arranged before an evening show on an Easter Sunday in 1952.

Easter service at Circle DI in Waco Texas as an example of what it also looked like at the Charro and other drive-ins that did this.
