2017 0108 Market Square and Around the Corner

Here's a pictorial update of Market Square which is approaching completion of its exterior surroundings of brick walkways and newly planted trees and benches.  That clock near the fountain is a nice touch to make this a favorite meeting or gathering place.  Photographers will enjoy taking photos here day or night.  I'd like to come back and see it once the flag is on the pole and dome illuminated at night.  Hopefully it will be blue like the new one over new bus station and these trees will mature and provide plenty of shade and greenery.  We had quite a few northers this season.
This is what your 1 o'clock sun on Market Square looks like.
Olvera building facing Washington St.  There is still major work to be done inside but Larry Lof & Co. have come a long way on this and other side facing Market Square with added balconies.  It neighbors with La Rioja - The Library and faces Rutledge Burger.

Most people might remember Super___ Miguelina when it was Bernie Whitman's Army surplus antique store
 The Fernandez Building

This was where La Movida night club was before the building was closed.  There looks to be a crawl space beneath the floor.
Here's a closer look.  It isn't basement deep.
Washington St.  Are Mondays always like this or were shoppers wiped out from Christmas shopping and New Years celebrating a week after?  The following photos are a block away from Market Square toward 10th St.
There are still quite a few used clothing stores downtown
The old Coca Cola building on E Washington St.
There used to be a Methodist church here.  This early 1960s building was probably supposed to look modern or space-age.  It is similar in style to several buildings in Matamoros.  It looks like it was once an office building.  Maybe there was a sign or light on the pinnacle at one time.  Who knows?  Who cares?  It also sells used clothing and has several small loan companies doing business there.  You can save a lot buying vintage clothing downtown.
There are many small loan business locations on Washington St and Adams side by side like these.
The owner cleaned this building up a bit and put a For Sale sign on it.
